“New Year, new me,” right? Okay, you don’t need to become a completely new self, but I’m sure you want to improve at least a bit. If the improvement in your photography is what you’re looking for, Laura BC has you covered. In her latest video, she shares seven reflective questions to ask yourself and have the answers lead you to a better, more productive, and more successful photography career in 2025.
1. Which photography niche do you want to get into, and does it align with what you enjoy shooting the most?
Laura emphasizes the importance of choosing a niche to present yourself professionally. While experimenting with different types of photography is valuable, she stresses the need to focus on one main niche to avoid confusing potential clients. Take some time to reflect on what you enjoy most and how it aligns with your long-term goals.
2. Is your niche profitable in your area?
Passion is essential, but practicality matters too. Some niches, like street photography, might not be as lucrative in certain locations. Others, like portrait, headshot, event, or wedding photography, can generally attract more clients. Laura shares her own story of moving from Spain to London to pursue opportunities in creative portrait photography. Think about what works best in your area and plan accordingly.
3. What skills or techniques do you need to master to stand out in your photography niche?
Standing out often requires mastering specific skills. For Laura, it was creative lighting that helped her gain recognition among music artists. Consider what will make you unique in your chosen niche and identify the techniques or tools you need to learn. Keep in mind that this will involve taking courses, watching tutorials, and dedicating time to practice. But hey, that’s what makes us improve, right?
4. What value are you giving to your clients that will make you stand out?
Differentiating yourself means offering clients something they won’t find elsewhere. Laura suggests adding value by providing free in-person meetings to showcase your portfolio and build trust. You could also think about unique ways to deliver your work, like offering custom photo albums or exceeding client expectations with extra photos.
5. How can you expand your reach, network, clients, or even followers?
Expanding your visibility is essential, and social media plays a major role in modern photography careers. Laura encourages using platforms like Instagram and learning to create engaging content such as reels. If social media isn’t your thing (I personally relate to this), consider attending local events or networking in person to build connections. Yes, even as an introvert. 🙂
6. What does your dream photography career look like, and what’s one step you can take right now to get closer to it in 2025?
Take time to visualize your ideal photography lifestyle. Whether it’s traveling the world or working in a studio, ensure your goals align with your preferred routine. Laura warns you to be realistic and consider whether your dream niche fits your current lifestyle. For example, if you don’t enjoy being on the road all the time, not seeing your family much, and carrying heavy gear all over the place – travel photography might not be the best choice. You get the gist. Once you’ve identified your vision, write down one actionable step to move closer to it.
7. What is holding you back from pursuing your goals?
Laura challenges you to identify barriers and take action to overcome them. Whether it’s fear of failure, lack of resources, or external circumstances, she reminds you that progress requires bold steps. Stepping out of the comfort zone is unpleasant at first – but very rewarding once you make that first step! Drawing from her own experience of relocating to London for better opportunities, Laura also emphasizes that age or gear limitations should never deter you from pursuing your dreams and trying something new.
Finally, Laura encourages revisiting these questions regularly. We all change, and your answers to these questions might change over time. Journaling and reflecting can help you stay focused and build the career you envision. Or, as Laura puts it, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.”
