FUJIFILM Releases a Compact Medium Format Powerhouse with a Fixed-Lens Twist

Have you ever wanted to mix a high-end medium format camera with a portable walk-around option? Well, now you can! Fujifilm has blurred the camera lines with the GFX100RF, a ‘bold new addition’ to its medium-format GFX lineup. It’s the first fixed-lens GFX model, pairing a 102MP medium-format sensor with a built-in 35mm f/4 lens (28mm full-frame equivalent) in a surprisingly compact, rangefinder-style body.

The camera is designed for photographers who crave medium-format quality without the bulk. The GFX100RF is aimed at travel, street, and documentary shooters who want a no-fuss, high-performance camera that’s not too big to carry around.

Key Features

  • 102MP Medium-Format Sensor – The same 43.8 x 32.9mm BSI CMOS II sensor found in the GFX 100S II, delivering 16-bit RAW files, 10-bit HEIFs, and exceptional dynamic range.
  • Built-in GF 35mm f/4 Lens – A wide-angle prime (28mm equivalent) with a leaf shutter, internal 4-stop ND filter, and a 7.8″ minimum focus distance.
  • Aspect Ratio Dial & Digital Teleconverter – Switch between nine aspect ratios (including 4:3, 1:1, and ultra-wide 65:24) and crop to 45mm, 63mm, or 80mm equivalents while retaining high resolution.
  • Compact & Lightweight – At 1.6 lbs, it’s smaller and lighter than the GFX 100S II (without a lens).
  • 5.76M-Dot EVF & Tilting Touchscreen – A high-res OLED viewfinder and a 3.2″ 3-way tilting LCD for flexible shooting.
  • 4K Video & Film Simulations – Records DCI/UHD 4K30p (with external ProRes support) and includes 20 Film Simulation modes, including Nostalgic Neg. and Eterna Bleach Bypass.

A Medium Format Camera That Feels Like a Point-and-Shoot

The GFX100RF’s fixed-lens design makes it quite unique. It offers medium format quality in a point-and-shoot form factor. The fixed 35mm f/4 lens keeps the camera light and portable, while still offering enough versatility for landscapes, street scenes, and environmental portraits.

The inclusion of a leaf shutter (with flash sync up to 1/4000 sec) and a built-in ND filter makes it ideal for creative flash work, shooting wide open in bright light and video.

Aspect Ratios & Digital Cropping

Fujifilm has added dedicated controls for photographers who love experimenting with composition. The Aspect Ratio Dial lets you switch between formats inspired by Fujifilm’s classic film cameras, while the Digital Teleconverter lever crops into the 102MP sensor to simulate longer focal lengths (45mm, 63mm, 80mm equivalents).

Designed for Portability & Style

With its rangefinder-inspired body, machined aluminium dials, and weather-resistant construction (when using the included filter adapter), the GFX100RF is built for travel and everyday use. It’s smaller than most full-frame mirrorless cameras with lenses attached, making it a surprisingly practical option for high-resolution shooting on the go.

Who is The GFX100RF For?

That’s a good question! Now we must remember that Fujifilm has some decent expertise in medium format cameras, and I presume they are going after those same photographers. The fixed 35mm lens is also an interesting choice, making the camera an even more of a niche prospect.

However, the price is not exactly inconsequential, and someone will to spend that for a walk-around fixed lens camera to do travel and street photography may have to be somewhat special. If you’re in two minds whether to splash out on a Leica and can’t be bothered to swap out lenses then this may be a an interesting option. Honestly, it’s still cheaper than most Leicas and certainly cheaper and more portable than a Hasselblad or Phase One.

Still, we like it when camera brands shake things up, (like the latest offering from Sigma for example), it certainly keeps life more interesting! No doubt the image quality will be exceptional, and with 102MP cropping will be no issue. I could certainly see some higher-end photographers using this as a lighter, simple camera motion when on the move.
