Perhaps you remember Isaac Carlton, who made a movie with the world’s smallest camera. In his latest video, he shares a new project—this time using weird cameras. The weirder the better — you know, the kind you find buried in Amazon listings and wonder, “Who actually uses this?” Well, apparently, Isaac does. And the end result is actually pretty fun! It’s chaotic, hilarious, and surprisingly creative.
Isaac’s mission is simple in theory: find four of the most weird and ridiculous cameras on Amazon, and make a movie using only their footage. No “real” cameras are allowed.
Take A Look Through the Glasses… With The Glasses
He kicks things off with the Oho camera glasses—a $100 pair of video-recording sunglasses that sound cooler than they are. They claim to shoot in 1080p HD, but the footage ends up looking more like a slightly zoomed iPhone video. It’s not great, but they get the job done… eventually.
Isaac quickly learns that the glasses require a triple tap to start recording. Unfortunately, he forgets this during take one. A few fumbles later, he finally starts building the opening scene of his movie: a robbery.
And (W)Hoo Is This?
Isaac plays both the robber and the homeowner in his crime-meets-thriller-meets-comedy. To make this work, he hands the glasses over to his roommate Nick to act as a stand-in. Because the footage is first-person, anyone wearing the glasses can become the character.
He also sneaks in one of his favorite weird camera finds: a $32 owl camera that looks like lawn décor (and a darn ugly one, if you ask me) but actually records video. It starts as a prop in the background, but it actually provides part of the footage.
Getting this camera to start recording is ridiculous. He has to download an app and register the camera on a sketchy-looking website… As it later turns out, this won’t be the only challenge during the weird camera filmmaking. Still, after a while of fumbling with it, he finally gets it to work.
Spy Pen – An Unpleasant Surprise
Next up is a camera that looks like an ordinary pen. Isaac films a full scene with it, but it turns out to be one of the most frustrating gadgets to work with. The footage is dark and eerie and totally doesn’t work with the rest of the film.
The Kids’ Weird Projector Camera: Impressive!
Last on the list is a kids’ toy camera that doubles as a projector. It’s supposed to shoot in 1080p HD, but in reality, the footage looks more like vintage VHS. Despite that, Isaac loves using it for the final shots of the film. It’s simple, fun, and surprisingly intuitive.
He brings in his friend Hunter to help film the ending. Together, they finish shooting the final scenes using this quirky projector cam. But then, the final challenge occurs…
From Thriller to Comedy
Just when everything seems to be wrapping up, Isaac realizes the story isn’t working. After some late-night brainstorming (and a FaceTime to his brother), he scraps an entire day’s footage and rewrites the movie from scratch. The serious heist thriller turns into a full-blown comedy.
He rebuilds the story using the same clips but gives it a new twist: an Amazon review gone hilariously wrong. The cameras don’t stop the robbery. They barely even film it properly. But that’s kind of the point. And in my opinion, this kind of story works perfectly with these weird cameras and the footage Isaac gets from them.
Just like his tiny camera movie, Isaac proves once again that even the strangest gadgets can be part of a creative project. You need to put in the work and laugh through the chaos and frustration. But hey, it’s the same in many other aspects of life, isn’t it? However, there’s another lesson here: don’t start a movie until your script is actually good.
