Recently, a chart on Reddit went viral after claiming which male hobbies women find the most (un)attractive. But now, we finally have real data to back it up. The results are equal parts surprising and amusing—especially if you’re into photography. Folks, our hobby made the top 10!
In a forced-choice survey of 814 participants, the team at Date Psychology asked women to classify 74 different male hobbies as either “attractive” or “unattractive.” According to their findings, photography is officially the 10th most attractive male hobby.
That’s right—photography ranks higher than 64 other hobbies, including golf, blacksmithing, and even riding motorcycles. Who would have thought?
Why Photography?
Sure, photography can sometimes feel like a lonely art form, especially when you’re off chasing that perfect sunset or waiting for hours for a comet that never appears. But it’s also a conversation starter, a memory-maker, and apparently, a major green flag.
Why? Because photography shows that you’re observant. That you pay attention to details. That you see beauty where others might walk by. In other words, your hobby speaks volumes about you—and based on this survey, it’s speaking loud and clear.
It’s interesting that the survey also explores what men think are the most attractive hobbies. And while some results don’t align at all, photography is still pretty high on the list – in the 11th place.
What Else Made the List of Most Attractive Male Hobbies?
Let’s just say this — if you’re a bilingual, traveling cook who plays a musical instrument and gardens on weekends after writing a poem – you’re quite a catch. Well, at least judging from this survey. Reading made it to the first place, foreign languages are in the second, and playing an instrument takes the bronze medal.
When it comes to men’s perception of what women find attractive, they think playing a musical instrument comes first. Swimming, surprisingly, takes the second place, and traveling is in the third place. But in women’s answers, swimming came 9th (slightly above photography), and travelling is in the 15th place.
When it comes to the least attractive hobbies for women, manosphere takes the absolute win. Men also got it mostly right, marking this “hobby” as the third most unattractive. This list also includes gambling, marijuana, po*n, and arguing online. Oh, and even the research shows that we don’t care about crypto.
Limitations
Of course, there are some limitations to the research, as the team writes. The sample was a “convenience sample of 814 participants (48% female),” they explain. “Consistently in the samples that we run we see a pretty even split for politics and feminist ideology, so we don’t expect much political ideological bias.”
However, our samples skew disproportionately toward women of high social status, high level of education (45% had a Master’s degree in the previous survey), and who are predominately White (> 90% in the last survey). Popular hobbies like “clubbing,” which was rated low in our sample, may be perceived as more attractive in other populations.
Still, photography ranks pretty high and I think that’s kind of cool. Personally, I think photographers truly are observant, creative, they notice beauty and know how to preserve it. For me, it’s no wonder that photography made it to the list of the most attractive male hobbies. However, if you decide to pick up the camera just to pick up the ladies – please don’t be the creepy photographer. Instead, truly try to find the beauty in the world around you and devote yourself to the craft. Even if it doesn’t get you a date, it will give you so much more and enrich your life in so many ways!
