Using a digital back with a Hasselblad 500C body

As an avid film photographer, the iconic Hasselblad 500C, the first in the legendary Hasselblad 500 series, remains one of my dream cameras. Launched in 1957, it continues to be celebrated as a marvel of camera design, especially for its leaf shutter that allowed flash synchronization at all shutter speeds using electronic flash; and ability to focus at full aperture through its automatic aperture stop-down.

So, it’s understandable that fellow film photographers like Shane Taylor of Framelines got curious about the CFV 100C digital back, which has a 100-megapixel sensor, 16 bit color, and 15 stops of dynamic range. While designed to pair with the Hasselblad 907X camera body, the back’s modularity extends to classic Hasselblad V System cameras like the Hasselblad 500C.

In the video above, Taylor talks about the experience — and results — of shooting with this combo of new and old. As he noted, the fact that you can do waist-level shooting while looking at a ground glass viewfinder, and shoot digitally on a 100-megapixel sensor is very exciting. If you’re also curious about what the photos from this combo looks like, his insights and sample images should have some interesting answers for you.

What do you think of his results? If you still have a Hasselblad 500C with you, would you shoot with the CFV 100C digital back? As always, do share your insights in the comments below!
