Apple Intelligence has existed for almost a year, but most iPhone, iPad, and Mac users are still waiting to witness something exciting. Well, Apple 2.0 what they’ve been waiting for. Apple’s developments feel slightly sluggish compared to what AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini can currently do. In the next WWDC 2025, this might finally deliver some intelligent, AI-driven experiences that users anticipated when the feature was initially revealed.
In 2024, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence with lofty ambitions. A highlight was to be a more intelligent Siri that was learn from your iPhone behavior and control your apps more intuitively. But that was never delivered. Apple kept it at bay, and we have not seen much action since then. The tech community has not waited. Applications such as ChatGPT and Gemini continue to advance and amaze, while Apple Intelligence remains relatively subdued.
But perhaps there is hope in sight. Apple researchers have created a new AI tool named Matrix3D, and it seems to be promising. With this tool, you can generate a 3D scene from only three ordinary photos. That could be revolutionary, particularly for photography enthusiasts, designers, or for shopping apps. It is one of the most intriguing things we have recently heard about Apple’s AI group.
The Mastermind Behind This Creation
Matrix3D was created by researchers at Apple and Nanjing University teams as well as those at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The AI examines the three images, calculates where the camera was held for each, and then constructs a 3D model. It is from this that it can display the object in various orientations, essentially like shifting a virtual camera around it. The output, posted on GitHub, resembles real videos and is rather realistic.
Millions of images and depth data from open sources were utilized in training Matrix3D. Researchers trained the AI to learn depth and perspective by concealing portions of the data and allowing it to work things out independently. It is an intelligent and ingenious technique that evidently paid dividends.
But here is the big question: When will Apple users have an opportunity to test this out in real life? Will Matrix3D be a feature of Apple Intelligence? Apple is not saying anything yet. The research is available, and the code is open. Other tech giants may even develop on top of it. But Apple has not announced any concrete plans to implement Matrix3D into its products yet.
As one who tracks tech, I think Apple has something special here. I hope they are capable enough to use it. Too frequently, we learn about innovative AI capabilities that never leave the lab. Matrix3D can potentially enhance iPhone photos and unleash true 3D creativity. If Apple wishes for Apple Intelligence to be more than competing tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, they must provide this intelligent feature.
