Third-party Chinese brands are a plenty. From Viltrox to Light Lens Lab, each company has offered some truly exciting lenses for photographers working in portraits, weddings, sports, wildlife, or macro photography. Amidst the growing number of Chinese brands, one is Mr Ding, who has been creating lenses for the Leica mount. However, it now appears that the Guangzhou-based manufacturer is time to expand its portfolio. Per new reports, Nikon users will now get a chance to experience their lenses.
Reported by Nikon Rumors, the company is set to launch the Noxlux DG 50mm f1.2 for Nikon’s mirrorless cameras. This lens seems to be a new variant for the Noxlux DG 501.1 created for Leica cameras. Here is a look at the expected specs:
- Aperture blades: 12 pieces
- Stepped aperture: Yes
- Coating type: AR coating (anti-reflection)
- Weight: about 475g (excluding lens cover)
- Filter port size: 52mm
- Lens body material: copper-aluminum structure
- Electronic focus prompt: Yes
The design of the Noxlux seemed to be borrowed from the Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH. However, the Nikon version of the lens appears to be the older version of Nikon lenses made for film, like the vintage Nikon 50mm f1.4 AI-s lens. It features the same textured focus and aperture ring. The lens also has markings on it, which give it a professional polish.

Since we have not tested the lens from Mr Ding in the past, it is hard to vouch for its performance. However, a lens that looks so retro and compact can go really well with Nikon’s Zf camera. In addition to aesthetics, another plus point is the f1.2 aperture, which can provide bokeh. This is perfect for portrait photographers, or anyone interested wanting to soft background. The last selling point is the price point. The Leica version of the lens is for just $399. Considering that, the Nikon version, too, will be under $400. There is no word on weather sealing, but there is a possibility that the lens also lacks it.
However, it must be remembered that there are various options in the price segment, and that this lens could be overshadowed by other brands. But you can know for sure if you compare them by various factors. Until then, let’s wait and see what the results are like.
