Is Viltrox Developing the First Teleconverter for Nikon?

Lens adapters have been quite exceptional for photographers. Whether using Sony lenses on a Canon body or pairing old Nikon lenses on new mirrorless cameras, a lens adapter gives photographers plenty of possibilities. In fact, some lens adapters, such as teleconverters, allow users to get the extra reach that they desire in wildlife or sports photography. While there are many options to choose from, it now appears that Viltrox is currently in the process of creating a “first-ever” teleconverter for Nikon‘s mirrorless cameras.

According to Nikon Rumors, Viltrox is working on a new teleconverter, a 2x one, for Nikon cameras. Details at the moment are scarce, but the design reveals that the teleconverter is for Z-mount cameras. While Sony cameras do not allow third-party teleconverters to be used with their devices, Nikon taking this step only means that they are thinking of expanding their base.

This opportunity is quite great for photographers since the prices of Nikon lenses and additional photography accessories, especially those made in China, will increase. Many photographers, especially those using telephoto lenses, may find this opportunity more exciting since Viltrox’s pricing range will be far lower than Nikon’s. Currently, Viltrox lens adapters range from $35 to a little over $200. On the other hand, Nikon’s own teleconverters range from $450 to $550.

In addition, there is also the understanding that this may open a gateway for Viltrox to make new telephoto lenses for the company. With Tamron already having such a great run, Viltrox, too, stands a chance to win. At the moment, the only mid-telephoto lens by the company is the 135mm f1.8 LAB, which is ideal for portraits. Priced under $1000, the lens did perform well in our review, with the only trade-off being its weight and size. If the company is able to work around this shortcoming and has more affordable options that can compete with Tamron, but at a lower price, then they just may have a chance to win.

Either way, Viltrox is trying to innovate in the photography accessory department, which is only considered great in our book. However, innovation, which does perform well in real-life scenarios, is what we are expecting from the company. Seeing their lenses so far, they just may be able to give us cost-effective teleconverters in the future. It remains to be seen when and how much these could cost. If they follow Kenko Tokina’s range, which is under $250, then we may just win.
