We have often seen a large number of third-party 50mm lenses originating from Japan and China, with some options being created in South Korea and Russia. The latter countries are homes to companies like Samyang and Zenit, both of which are trying to carve a space against the likes of ViltroxSigma, TamronLaowa, TTArtisan, and more. It now appears that Zenit has finally unveiled a long-reported lens during an event in Russia. What could it be? Let’s find out.

First reported by Leica Rumors, Zenit has announced a new lens for Leica M models, the Zenitar 50mm f1, during the Portfolio Party 2025 photo festival in Moscow, Russia. The lens was teased in 2019, but the launch only occurred now. Zenit notes that the lens will begin production now, with the prototype already being used to capture a rocket launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in April. Here are some images.

Although Zenit has not revealed the make or specification of the lens, they have revealed other models, which may go into production as well:

  • Zenithar 16mm f2.8
  • Zenithar 50mm f1.2
  • Zenithar 75mm f1.4 Helios Edition
  • Selena 58mm f1.9
  • Selena 85mm f2.2
  • Helios 85mm f1.5 40-2

On Zenit’s website, there is one lens for the Leica M-mount, the Zenitar 21mm f2.8 lens. In that regard, the 50mm f1 could be a great addition to their lineup.

Zenit announced the Zenitar 50mm f0.95 in 2019, an all-manual lens designed for Sony E-mount. The performance was great, considering the image had character, bokeh, and a great build. It was also priced less than the Nikon Noct and Leica lenses. In that regard, we are certain the 50mm f1 could also have great traits, but since its Chinese counterparts are able to cut costs, Zenitar 50mm f1 has to offer something others don’t. For instance, Lailens announced the 50mm f1.1 for Leica M mount, which costs $800. TTArtisan sells M 50mm f0.95 ASPH for $755, and 7Artisans’ M 50mm f1.1 is at $369.

With so many lenses available, the driving forces will be image quality and price. Zenit has not revealed the price of the new f1 yet, but since the f0.95 variant is for $910, the new lens could be in a similar range. If Zenit commands a price tag higher than TTArtisan, then we do hope its 50mm is truly impeccable upon shipping. If not, the company’s sales will not really see a massive difference. Until then, keep an eye out.
