There was a time when making a portrait could take hours due to the exposure limitations of century-old cameras. As technology progressed, portraits, largely shot in the studios early, began to be captured in a few minutes. Not too late, and with the invention of smaller 35mm cameras, one could make a portrait anywhere, from the comfort of their home to during an outing in another city. Today, portrait photography stands as one of the most popular genres in the industry, with many young photographers beginning their careers with this. Canon is one brand that many trusts, so I decided to create a list of some exceptional portrait cameras that will help you advance.
Canon 5Ds
For some high-end portrait photographers, megapixels are everything. This is where the Canon 5Ds come into play. The camera houses a full frame 50.6MP CMOS sensor, with a scene detection feature, and 61 reticular and 41 cross-type autofocus points. The ISO range isn’t that huge, with the highest ISO going to 6400. With this device, you get great color versatility, a quiet shutter, quick autofocus, and durability. However, it means that you will have to slow down since you can’t shoot hundreds of images on this device. Your card will fill up soon. This is, however, perfect for seasoned photographers who know exactly what kind of images they want to make.
Canon 5D Mk IV
The 5D Mk IV has a lower resolution than the 5Ds, with a 30MP sensor but a larger ISO range of up to 102,400. The camera has Dual Pixel CMOS AF, 7fps of continuous shooting, 61 AF points, Dual Pixel RAW, and 4K video. Some of the things we love about the camera include its image quality, dynamic range, autofocus capabilities, ergonomics, and LCD touchscreen. If you pair it with a great Canon lens for portraits, like Zeiss 85mm f1.4 Milvus, you can get the desired results.
Canon EOS RP
The EOS RP is a perfect model. It has the same sensor (24MP) and is built as the Canon 6D Mk II, but it has 4779 autofocus points and an ISO range of 100-40,000. It has a flash sync to 1/180th, making it ideal to pair with flash photography. The Canon camera is small and has great weather sealing, decent autofocus, and amazing image quality. When paired with Canon 50mm f1.2 L USM RF, the lens gives beautiful results, with creamy bokeh and sharpness. Plus, it is worth $800.
Canon EOS R
The EOS R has a 30MP sensor, a dual-pixel CMOS AF with 5,655 manually selectable AF points, and offers 4K 30p with Canon log and 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI output. The camera has good eye detection since it received firmware updates, has good weather sealing, is built well, and has a great lens system. As we said in a post: “So what’s great about the Canon EOS R for portraiture? To go in depth, I really enjoy the autofocus. There is a single point focusing mode that allows you use a standard point and then a smaller point.”
Canon EOS R3
The EOS R3 is a spectacular camera for low light. In our review, we said: “Face detection still worked for these (really low light) shots that were too dark for me to even see the subject’s eyes through the viewfinder. This was the most impressive feature to me, not only because of the face detection but because many mirrorless cameras struggle to focus on dark areas with little contrast.” The camera features a 26MP sensor, ISO up to 102,400, 5-axis image stabilization, and 1053 phase detection points. So, if you are someone who likes to shoot in low light, then this is the camera for you.
