Sigma has multiple zoom lenses in its portfolio. Options such as 14-24mm f2.8 DG DN Art, 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary, and 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports have enabled photographers to capture images of wide and distant objects and people. It now appears the company is focused on providing more options to its existing and new customers, with the introduction of new wide-angle zoom lenses. Here is a look at a patent that describes what they do.
According to Asobinet, the company has published patent number P2025116419 on August 8, which showcased multiple designs for large-aperture zoom lenses. While the application was filed last year, it was recently revealed, showcasing three different examples: 28-45mm f1.8 DG DN, 24-40mm f1.8, and 30-50mm f1.8.
The patent states that the lenses’ goal is to offer a bright aperture while reducing their length and providing quite autofocus performance. At the same time, it will also aim to reduce center-of-gravity shifts during zooming and focusing, making the new lenses ideal for hybrid shooters. Here is a look at the specifications:
Example 1
- Focal length: 28.84-43.66
- F-number: 1.86
- Angle of view: 75.19-50.51
- Image height: 21.63
- Total length: 168.66
Example 2

- Focal length: 24.72-38.82
- F-number: 1.86
- Angle of view: 85.45-55.91
- Image height: 21.63
- Total length: 164.03
Example 3
- Focal length: 30.88-48.48
- F-number: 1.86
- Angle of view: 73.11-46.05
- Image height: 21.63
- Back focal length: 174.77
Sigma also states that there is a huge demand and popularity of zoom lenses with bright apertures, especially amongst those using full-frame cameras. However, with f1.8 lenses, and knowing Sigma, you often get optics that are large, heavy, and have a much slower autofocus. As a result, people often go for other third-party lenses, which offer more speed and less weight. It appears now Sigma wants to change that, but it remains to be seen how far the company is ready to go.
If you look at models like the 16-28mm f2.8 Contemporary and 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art, you see that both lenses weigh closer to 1 to 1.8 lbs. Overall, the build is good, and they are compact, too. However, the challenge was the lack of weather sealing and barrel distortion at the wider ends. So, our hope is that the new lens can achieve better results.
Additionally, Sigma already has a 28-45mm f1.8 lens, which weighs about 2.1 lbs. So, if the company is keen on introducing a second version, it had better get it closer to 1lb and also include weather sealing this time. Perhaps the lower price point will further entice people. At the same time, patents never see the light of day. So, it is safe to say that the new zoom lens may or may not become a reality. All of it entirely depends on the market trends and Sigma’s strategy for the future. Until then, let’s just wait and watch.
