AI and digital backdrops don’t seem to go anywhere soon (no matter what we think of them). So if you can’t beat them – should you join them? Rafal Wegiel shares his thoughts on why AI and digital backdrops could be a good idea. In his recent video, he gives you five reasons why you should include them in your work.
Sharpen your skills and train your eye
Using AI and digital backdrops is an excellent way to develop a keener artistic sense. Rafal explains that when he first started experimenting with AI, he appreciated nearly everything it generated. However, as he worked more with the technology, he became more discerning, learning to spot what worked and what didn’t. This process, he says, can help you refine your skills and better understand the creative elements that make an image impactful.
Cost-effective solutions
Digital backdrops offer a budget-friendly alternative to traditional backdrops made from paper or fabric. Rafal points out that you can save significant money by creating custom designs digitally, needing only access to software tools like Photoshop. This opens up opportunities to produce high-quality, creative backdrops without the financial constraints of buying physical props. Although, with the ever-increasing prices of Photoshop… Eventually, investing in physical backdrops will become a more affordable option.
Endless variety for every project
One of the most exciting advantages of digital backdrops is their limitless creative potential. In the past, photographers were limited to the physical backdrops they had on hand. Now, Rafal emphasizes, AI allows you to craft unique designs tailored to your artistic vision. He notes that this flexibility makes it easier for photographers to develop a distinct style, experimenting with colors, patterns, and tonalities.
Offer clients something unique
Clients today want headshots that make an impression, particularly in competitive digital spaces. Rafal highlights how digital backdrops enable you to create specific designs for each client, making their headshots stand out and better reflect their personality. Whether for social media or professional branding, these custom images can help clients differentiate themselves. Not to mention, this adds value to the service you provide as a photographer.
Increase your revenue opportunities
Rafal also underscores the financial benefits of using digital backdrops. By offering clients the option to enhance their headshots with unique, customized backdrops, you can create upselling opportunities that boost your revenue. Many clients, he notes, are eager to invest in headshots that are distinct and impactful, making it easier to justify higher fees for these custom-tailored services.
The future of headshot photography
AI and digital backdrops are likely to become unavoidable tools in the photography industry. So, Rafal encourages you to embrace their potential. He stresses the importance of starting early to familiarize yourself with the technology and develop your skills. By experimenting with AI and exploring its possibilities, he argues that you can keep their work fresh, innovative, and competitive.
Now, from a personal standpoint – I’m not a hug fan of the omnipresent AI tools. Sure, they’re fun to play with, and some AI can be really helpful when editing (think cloning or masking). However, replacing entire elements of an image with AI-generated stuff isn’t really my cup of tea.
But on the other hand, I don’t make a living from photography so I can afford not to follow the industry trends. If there are professionals reading this, I’m really curious to hear your thoughts. Have you embraced AI backdrops and other tools like, for example, sky replacement? What do you think of them? Feel free to share in the comments.
