If you’re tired of dodging traffic while photographing cityscapes or getting side-eyed by strangers during street photography sessions, why not trade it all in for the lush, green pastures of the Isle of Man? The island is searching for a Biosphere Photographer in Residence, and if you’re the right fit, you could spend a whole year capturing its stunning landscapes, quirky wildlife, and unique culture.
What’s the job?
As you can probably imagine, this is more than just pointing your camera at some pretty sunsets (though there will definitely be plenty of those). As the photographer in residence, you’ll be tasked with organizing five public events, creating content for social media and blogs, and building a photographic legacy that captures the island’s biodiversity and heritage. The goal is to get people closer to nature and help the Isle of Man shine – not just on Instagram, but in real life.
It’s worth noting that you get to keep the copyright for all the photos you take. No sneaky fine print that turns your art into someone else’s gain. The Manx Wildlife Trust, Visit Isle of Man, and UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man will have rights to use the images for promotions, but the creative control stays with you, as well as the right to sell your images elsewhere.
Why the Isle of Man?
Think rolling hills, dramatic coastlines, and wildlife galore. The island is home to everything from Atlantic bluefin tuna and leatherback turtles to white-tailed eagles and rare wildflowers. If you’ve ever dreamed of photographing a humpback whale or catching the perfect shot of a polecat (Google it – they’re adorable), this is your chance.
“Offering a diverse range of experiences, from scenic landscapes and outdoor adventures to rich cultural heritage and historical landmarks, Visit Isle of Man provides visitors with everything they need to explore the Island,” the Manx Wildlife Trust writes in the job posting. “Whether you’re looking for tranquil coastal walks, or a deep dive into the Island’s fascinating history, Visit Isle of Man is your guide to discovering all that this special place has to offer.”
The perks
The role comes with a £6,000 stipend and an £8,000 budget for gear, training, and events. Need a new lens or a workshop to up your skills? Covered. You’ll also get office space, a phone, and a team to back you up. Oh, and the title of Biosphere Photographer in Residence for 2025 – that’s going straight to the top of your résumé. I mean, which photographer hasn’t worked for exposure, too? 🙂 After all, how many people can say they’ve been an official photographer for a UNESCO Biosphere? If you’re a nature lover and adventurer, this sounds like a dream project.
How to apply
Applications are open until midnight on January 26, 2025. You can submit your pitch in written, audio, or video format. Be creative! Whether you’re a storyteller, adventurer, or just really good at capturing the magic of a moment, this is your chance to shine.
Still, there are a few limitations. For written applications, stick to three sides of A4 (electronic only). No printing it out and snail-mailing it. If you’re submitting photos, make sure they fit within those three pages. And this probably goes without saying – showcase your best work! If you prefer to get a little more dynamic, send that video or audio submission, but keep it under three minutes long. MP3 or MP4 format, please. Alongside it, include a single side of A4 that covers your budget and timeline plans – just the essentials.
You’ll find more information about the job and the applications on the Manx Wildlife Trust’s website. And if you decide to apply – good luck!
