Canon Expands the RF Lineup with Two New Lenses for Hybrid Creators

There’s an increasing overlap between photographers and videographers these days, with most people shooting at least a little of both, even if it’s not an even split. So it makes sense then, that Canon is producing more lenses designed for hybrid photography and video use.

Canon has released two new hybrid lenses, the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ, Canon’s first RF power zoom lens optimized for cinematic video, and the RF20mm F1.4 L VCM, a fast ultra-wide prime, aim to provide greater creative flexibility for social media creators, vloggers, and hybrid shooters.

A Power Zoom Built for Video and Social Content

The RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ stands out as Canon’s first RF-S lens with a power zoom function, offering smooth, controlled focal length adjustments—ideal for cinematic video, live streaming, and selfie-style shooting. Designed as a compact companion for the new EOS R50 V, it also pairs seamlessly with other EOS R-series cameras.

Key features include:

  • Wide 14-30mm focal range (22.4-48mm full-frame equivalent), useful for tight spaces and dynamic framing.
  • Optical Image Stabilization (IS) to reduce blur in handheld shooting.
  • Customizable control rings for tailored zoom speeds and creative adjustments.
  • Unique ring-style power zoom (rather than a lever or button), allowing operation from any angle—helpful for vertical shooting or selfie modes.

Price and availability

Priced at $329.99, the lens is set to arrive in July 2025, positioning it as an accessible option for creators looking to enhance their video work without bulky equipment.

A Fast Ultra-Wide Prime for Hybrid Shooters

The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is the latest in Canon’s RF Hybrid Prime series, designed for those who frequently switch between photo and video. With a bright f/1.4 aperture, it excels in low light and offers dramatic depth of field, while its Voice Coil Motor (VCM) ensures near-silent, precise autofocus—critical for video work.

Notable improvements include:

  • Minimal focus breathing, reducing unwanted shifts in perspective during focus pulls.
  • An iris ring for smooth aperture adjustments while filming.
  • Advanced optics, including UD and Super UD lens elements, to minimize chromatic aberration.

Priced at $1,699, the RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is aimed at professionals and serious creators, including videographers, journalists, and indie filmmakers. It’s scheduled for release in April 2025.
