Canon lenses are known for their excellent optics, finesse, and absolutely striking colors. The company has many different series of lenses, and one of the recently popular ones is the VCM ‘hybrid’ prime lenses. The company has launched 20mm, 24mm, 30mm, and 50mm VCM lenses so far, and it appears a new lens is set to launch in this portfolio soon. The new focal range will excite many photographers.
According to Canon Rumors, the new RF Voice Coil Motor (VCM) lens is an 85mm f1.4 L VCM, making it the fifth L-series VCM lens. As the lenses are designed for both photographers and videographers, the wide open aperture will make it a favourite amongst many. The new lens is said to be lightweight, compact, and also make it ideal for those who travel often. At the moment, the new design is said to have the same size of 76.5 x 99.3mm and weighing between 519–580g. Other than that, we don’t have any other specifications yet.
The 85mm focal length will be liked by portrait photographers, as well as those who like travel, events, weddings, or documentary photography. It is versatile, and with f1.4, it makes it ideal for low-light shooting as well. With more lenses focused on pronounced bokeh, the new Canon 85mm could be exciting, especially paired with newer cameras that are equally smaller. Although the hope is that the new 85mm is lightweight, unlike the 85mm f1.2, which was as heavy as 1.2kg,
There is also the promise of a fast autofocus with the new 85mm, as the VCM replaces the traditional Ultrasonic Motor (USM). If paired with a camera like the R5 II, which promises fast focus, especially on people of color in low light, then many portrait or event photographers stand to gain improved results. As we said in our review of the 50mm, the lens has fast focus, a great build, and it is much lighter than the f1.2 variant. “The Canon RF50mm F1.4 L VCM is probably the single greatest argument for not only getting Canon photographers to stay the course, but to even win over photographers from competing systems,” we said in our review.
The new 85mm f1.2 costs $3000, so the new 85mm f1.4 VCM could be cheaper. For instance, the 50mm VCM is priced at $1500, making it more affordable for many professionals who want a second lens. There are also other 85mm options from third-party manufacturers such as Rokinon 85mm f1.4 II MF and Samyang 85mm f1.4 RF, but there could be a trade-off between autofocus, which many photographers prefer. Either way, we will update you as soon as we hear more about the new lens. For now, let’s hope it can fit into the shoes of its older sibling.
