Telephoto zoom lenses are on every manufacturer’s mind. With more sophisticated cameras like mirrorless technology, many photographers, especially those interested in travel or casual shooting, prefer a zoom lens over a prime. This allows not just more diversity when making images, but is also far more cost-effective than buying prime lenses of different focal lengths. Many companies like Tamron, Sigma, and Canon are exploring these possibilities. In fact, reports of two new Canon zoom lenses are making the rounds on the internet. Here’s a look at what you can expect.
Canon 70-150mm May Be On The Way
According to Canon Rumors, the company is going to launch an RF 70-150mm f2.8 IS STM in Q4 of 2025. The lens is said to be compact, given its size. In fact, patents of RF 70-150mm f2L IS USM design have also been seen on the web. However, patents of a smaller f2.8 lens are not registered anywhere online.
The report states that the lens will help to build a ‘holy trinity’ after the launch of the Canon RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM and Canon RF 16-28mm f2.8 IS STM. While photographers will be more comfortable with the RF 70-200mm f2.8 IS STM, it may eventually boil down to the size of the lens. As a result, the 70-150mm focal length would be a better fit to complete the group.
Whether the company actually launches a lens of this nature only time can tell. But since Canon had launched the same focal length back during the film era, it would be an ideal addition rather than a standard 70-150mm. Moreover, a more affordable lens is always welcome in these challenging times.
A New Super Telephoto Zoom
Reports of Canon updating the RF 400mm f2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f4L IS USM lenses are quite fresh. The company may relaunch these primes with a built-in teleconverter in 2026. However, there are reports that this year, we may see a few big telephoto zooms. Canon Rumors states that the company is working on two super telephoto zoom lenses. One of them is an RF 150-600mm f5.6L IS USM. The focal range is definitely an interesting choice.
Canon already has 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 L IS USM, RF 100-300mm f2.8 L, and RF 200-800mm f6.3-9 IS USM, so a 150-600mm fits somewhere between them, and the aperture is certainly a stop lower than the 100-800mm option. However, it remains to be seen whether the lens actually sees the light of day.
Canon’s L lenses are exceptional, but they come with a hefty price tag. As a result, a lens of this nature is for professionals who do not want to compromise on the quality or weather sealing. It remains to be seen what Canon has to offer this year.
