Smartphone cameras have come a long way, and for many creators, they’re now powerful enough to handle everything from travel vlogs to professional client work. But if you’ve ever tried to build a proper shooting setup around your phone (adding a mic, a light, or mounting it to a tripod), you’ll know it can quickly get messy.
That’s where the Moment SuperCage comes in. It’s designed specifically for mobile filmmakers and aims to give you a more solid, flexible way to rig up your phone for filming. I’ve been using it over the past few weeks to see how it holds up in real-world use and whether it makes mobile filmmaking easier.
Key Features Of the Moment Supercage
The Moment SuperCage is designed to turn your smartphone into a full-on filmmaking rig, without the bulk. It’s made from aluminium, so it’s both rigid and relatively lightweight enough to make handheld filming easy, even with accessories added. It’s compatible with both iPhone and several Android phones, including iPhone 15/16, Galaxy S22–S24, and Pixel 7–9. Here are some of the other main features:
Integrated Hub
The built-in hub is the genius part of the SuperCage. It lets you connect up to six accessories directly to your phone using a single USB-C connection. That means no more juggling a tangle of wires just to plug in what you need. This was a big part of the allure for me, and really what piqued my interest about the Supercage over other more simple designs.
With the hub, you can connect essential gear like an external microphone, wired headphones for live monitoring, a portable SSD for recording high-bitrate video, a power bank to keep your phone charged during long shoots, and even external lights, an external monitor or a camera control interface, all at once. These days, mobile phones only have one USB-C port, so the SuperCage essentially amplifies the connection potential of the phone.
NATO/Arca Compatible
The SuperCage is built with compatibility in mind. It has NATO rails on the top and sides, so you can quickly attach and reposition accessories like handles, lights, or external monitors without tools. The Arca-compatible base slots straight into most tripod mounts, letting you switch between handheld and locked-off shots in seconds. It also has 4 separate cold shoe attachments.
On top of that, you get more mounting points than you could ever need: 4 cold shoes, 39 ¼”-20 threads, and 4 ⅜”-16 threads, which is perfect for rigging up anything you want. To keep things tidy, cable routing slots and included clips help manage wires and avoid clutter. I particularly like the neat little slot underneath that hides an alum wrench.
Reversible and Adjustable
The SuperCage’s adjustable phone clamp slides up to 95mm side-to-side, allowing you to balance your phone exactly how you want it, which is especially handy when adding accessories or using external lenses. The mirrored design also means you can mount your phone with the ports facing either forward or backwards, making it easy to switch between front-facing and rear-camera setups depending on your shoot.
Additional Accessories
The Moment Supercage is designed to work with pretty much any accessory you could dream of. However, Moment does sell a few dedicated items to help with mounting and functionality. There is a Cheese Plate mount to help make the cage even more attachment-friendly, a dedicated mobile USB-C shotgun microphone that you can mount on the top of the cage, and of course, the Bluetooth-connected handles.
Moment suggests using either a fast writing SD card (V90 recommended) or SSD, and a power bank with 100W pass-through power to charge your phone.
Ease of Use and Setup
You can’t really get too much easier than this; it’s pretty much plug in and play straight out of the box, and just like everything from Moment, the packaging is just as slick as the product. The phone clamp is secure yet easy enough to attach an iPhone in the case, and I was confident that the phone would be safe and not be at risk of falling out. There was also plenty of space to move the phone around to adjust the position and leave room for using external lenses and filters.
The handles were easy to attach, and connecting to the phone via Bluetooth was a breeze. Similarly, the connections to the cage via USB-C and the SD card were all very obvious. All the connections worked seamlessly, and everything just glided together.
I fixed the cage with two different tripod mounts (one via the Arca-Swiss mount and another via the large thread), and both worked exactly as you’d wish them to. It’s not exciting, but it’s this precision that really makes a big difference when you’re in the middle of filming and you just need things to work.
Ergonomics and Handling
The cage handles well. It’s light enough while still adding a little extra stability. I find it easier to manage than a single-handed mobile gimbal, which tends to be a little unpredictable with movement. Coupled with the iPhone 16 Pro’s inbuilt stabilisation, shooting handheld was not an issue at all. The Bluetooth connection was helpful in starting and stopping filming without having to take your hands off the cage. All in all, it handles well, and it’s easy to balance everything around the cage.
Pros and Cons
Let’s talk first about the good things, because , in general, this Supercage really does live up to it’s name! The design of the cage is very simple, and that’s actually part of it’s strength. However, don’t be fooled by it’s simplicity, it’s actually incredibly well thought through, and both relatively light yet durable. The abundance of connection options is a fabulous feature, making it truly compatible with almost anything you’d care to attach.
The handles are well-designed, offering great adjustability and a comfortable grip, and it’s a huge plus that they can store tools for quick access. The cage fits perfectly onto an ARCA-Swiss tripod head, which means no more messing with tripod plates or screws. It also slips easily into a bag, making it highly portable, and overall helps minimise your filmmaking footprint, which is ideal for mobile creators on the go.
Switching to vertical mode is quick and easy, which is a smart touch with mobile-first content in mind. It’s much simpler than setting up a gimbal, especially with the iPhone 15/16’s built-in stabilisation making gimbals largely redundant, and it gives you loads of mounting options without the bulk.
Perhaps the best thing about the Supercage, however, is the flexibility to plug in and power multiple accessories, like an SD card, mic, battery pack, or headphones. This makes it a fully capable mobile production rig. No longer do you have to Frankenstein some sort of functional rig together or rely on the phone’s limited storage capacity (which also isn’t an option if you’re shooting 4K ProRes).
That said, there are a few things to keep in mind. The cage doesn’t have any stabilisation features, so if you think you need that, consider a gimbal. The Bluetooth connection dropped out occasionally during use, and the battery top popped off a couple of times, causing me to scrabble around under furniture to find it! Maybe a lock feature to keep the top on wouldn’t be a bad idea.
I also found that the audio setup can be a bit finicky, so definitely check that your audio is set to the external microphone and test everything before rolling. I found that the iPhone camera app isn’t reliable, and I needed to use either the Moment app or the Blackmagic app to be able to select the external microphone. I also ran into issues with specific mics; for example, there were a few hiccups when using the Hollyland Lark M2.
These issues were easily surmountable, however, and not problems with the Supercage per se. I tend to use my iPhone as a second camera, so the audio wasn’t such an important aspect in the end. My advice would be to make sure you test everything properly with each new device before heading out on a shoot.
Conclusion
Overall, the Moment SuperCage is a thoughtfully designed, high-quality rig that brings pro-level flexibility to mobile filmmaking. It strikes a great balance between build quality, functionality, and portability, making it ideal for creators who want to get the most out of their smartphone camera without adding too much bulk. It’s easy to use and simple to set up, and whether you’re shooting handheld or mounting to a tripod, the SuperCage keeps everything secure, streamlined, and ready to go.
For the price, I would recommend buying at least the middle option with the Bluetooth handles as it makes life a lot easier and stops you from having to touch the mobile screen to start and stop filming (tricky if hand holding!). Sure, it’s not completely without quirks, but for most users, the benefits far outweigh the minor issues. If you’re serious about mobile video, this is one of the smartest upgrades you can make. All in all, this is one of my favourite pieces of equipment, and something I am taking with me on every shoot, if only to capture decent behind-the-scenes footage.

There are a couple of different bundle options for buying the Supercage, directly from the Moment website. The Supercage alone is $199, however with the Bluetooth handles it is currently $279. There’s also a third bundle available which includes the cage, the two handles, the cheese plate and 3 USB cords for $414.
