Nikon has officially discontinued its flagship DSLR, the Nikon D6, marking the end of an era for one of the company’s most advanced professional cameras. The discontinuation notice appeared quietly on Nikon Japan’s website, where the camera is now listed under the “discontinued products” category.
Released in early 2020, the Nikon D6 was known for its durability, speed, and autofocus performance. These features made it a staple among sports photographers and photojournalists. Its rugged design and reliability earned the D6 widespread respect among photographers of all genres.
Despite its relatively short time on the market, the D6 received notable recognition in the design world. It was honored with the iF Design Award 2021 in the Product Category, the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2021, and the 2020 Good Design Award, as noted on Nikon Japan’s website.
The D6 represented the culmination of Nikon’s DSLR development. It featured a 20.8MP full-frame sensor, 14 fps continuous shooting, and an advanced 105-point all-cross-type autofocus system. It was built for speed, accuracy, and rugged use in challenging conditions.
The discontinuation of the D6 reflects a broader industry shift towards mirrorless technology. Nikon itself has heavily invested in its Z-series mirrorless cameras in recent years. With the D6 stepping off the production line, Nikon’s focus now appears firmly set on expanding and refining its mirrorless lineup.
Though production has ended, you can still find the Nikon D6 on B&H for $6,496.95. If you’re sticking with DSLRs, it’s definitely a worthy investment. Although, I believe Nikon, like most other companies, will keep investing in mirrorless – so you might consider it as well.
