Canon has multiple RF lenses, many of which continue the legacy of its popular and much-loved L series lenses. They are designed to withstand bad weather, have powerful performance, and have fast autofocus. The company has been expanding this list with new offerings, many of which are hybrid lenses now. Per a new patent, the company is working on a new lens that will offer a bright aperture and be perfect for portrait photographers. Here’s a look.
Accoridng to Asobinet, the company is working on a fast prime lens, patent number P2025118483, a new 50mm f1.2 lens — a lens our Editor in Chief considers to be their best. The patent was published on August 13 and showcases a high-performing lens with a high-speed focus. Here is a look at its design:

The company’s design states the new 50mm will feature an inner focus and is said to offer a shallow depth of field while improving the autofocusing performance. The inner focus mechanism will help the company to make lenses that are fast, allowing one to focus on the subject in an instant. The new design will also make the lens light, compact, and combat challenges such as sagittal coma flare. The latter can be achieved with the aim of using aspherical elements in the rear group.
Canon currently has two prime 50mm lenses: the 50mm f1.2L, launched in 2018 as one of the first lenses for the RF mount, and the 50mm f1.4, announced last year. The new patent seems to have revived the 2018 lens, but making it much smaller and faster. In our review of the original optics, we liked the image quality, the autofocus, creamy bokeh, and even sharpness. It was an absolutely perfect lens. So, the only challenge we face is the weight and size, which are also adaptable. So if the company manages to make a smaller lens that can match the predecessor in terms of its performance, we will certainly have a winner.
While it is not certain that the company will launch a new product anytime soon, this showcases that the company is thinking of improving its already perfect device. A lens like this can be perfect for photographers using newer cameras, but it would be great if it came at a decent price, too. However, in the meantime, we must wait and see how the company makes the new 50mm different. Perhaps it does become better than the last.
