Kodak has been an icon in the film photography community. Some of the most iconic images produced in human history were shot on Kodak film. While analog is no longer the most common medium, Kodak has also found a way to cater to the digital crowd. And per a new report, the company is now one of the best brands on the market.
Per a new ranking by BCN+R, Kodak has been named the leader in the compact camera market. The data was collected in October and showcases how the company is dominating the market in Japan. One of the most popular choices amongst photographers is the PIXPRO FZ55, especially the black variant, which claimed the top honors. The second model to follow closely is the PIXPRO C1 Black, while the third is the PIXPRO WPZ2. And the brown variant of C1 is the fourth place holder. The last two were in the top 10 and not the top 5.
Other cameras that also made it to the top 10 list include models like PowerShot SX740 HS (both black and silver variants), Fujifilm’s Instax mini Evo, and Panasonic’s LUMIX TZ99 in both black and white colors. Canon and Panasonic feature high-end models that also feature a larger zoom range, which is ideal for photographers to move from their phones to a proper camera.
Kodak’s success is noteworthy as there are other competitors who have far more experience in compact camera industry. One could also say that the brand is looking to branch out, and continue their legacy of innovation for a digital generation.
In addition, Kodak has resurged as the winner at the Yodobashi Camera’s October sales charts with PIXPRO C1. According to the report, the camera, which is priced under $150, outperforms models from Leica, Sony, and OM System. Some of the cameras that Kodak beat again includes Canon’s PowerShot SX740 HS and Sony’s VLOGCAM ZV-1 II. From the looks of it, compact cameras are doing well, proving a higher demand of cameras that are coat effective and cater to people who like photography as a casual hobby. These are people who like nostalgic images and need a break from their phones.
Brands like Sony, Nikon, Leica, and Canon continue to innovate in the premium camera market. Still, the market for cost-effective cameras is not changing as much as it should. Kodak found a chasm to fill, and with niche models, they can begin with beginners, families, and nostalgic users alike.
This proves that brands must pay attention to every kind of photographer, including amateurs. Right now, the market is filled with multiple players all focusing on higher models. In that regard, where will the young people go? And so, Kodak is rightly here to help them.
