The OM System has given us some exceptional cameras over the years, including Pen F, Pen EP7, OM-D E-M1, and the OM-D EM5 Mk II. The company recently updated its portfolio with the OM3, a durable, retro-style camera with a 20MP Four Thirds sensor. It now appears that after the success of this model, OM System will reportedly launch a new camera, the successor to the company’s popular adventure camera, the OM-5.
A New Stacked Sensor OM-5 II?
According to 43 Rumors, the publication first revealed that a new camera is set to launch on June 17. The camera is also said to have a “stacked sensor,” but no other details were revealed. However, just yesterday, they reported (via Asobinet) that the camera could be a successor to the OM-5, which was launched in 2022. The report adds that the OM-5 II will feature a “20MP stacked sensor,” similar to the OM-1 II.
However, both publication takes the sources’ report with a pinch of salt. This is because the OM-1 II and the OM-3 were both launched recently. The OM-1 II was announced in 2024, with the OM-3 being revealed in 2025. In fact, we refused to review the OM-1 II because the camera featured minor updates, yet had a price tag of $2,399.99. This, considering the state of Micro Four Thirds today, is shocking. As a result, a new OM-5 II, having the same features as the other two models, will not bode well for the company.
There is a possibility that the OM-5 successor features a traditional 20MP sensor with TruePic X image processor. There could also be changes to the USB port, with the inclusion of the Type-C. However, other than it is hard to say what could be the case on the launch date.
What We Want From the Camera
Reports aside, we, too, have a wishlist for the OM-5 II. In our review of the original model, we liked the model for offering advanced camera features such as handheld high-res, live composite, and Starry AF at a cost-effective price. However, the device did have its own quirks, which we hope they change. Here is what we want from the new camera:
- Retain the retro look but new improvements: We want the classic OM-5 design, but the inclusion of a joystick, a second SD card slot, and a touchscreen will be great for new users.

- Weather resistance: OM System makes the best rugged cameras. While the OM-5 did feature IP53-rated weather sealing, we hope that the tradition continues with newer models.
- A smart autofocus; One of the drawbacks was the lack of animal AF, and that the AF system was not designed for sports use. OM1 had great eye AF for people, which worked on birds as well. Since MFT sensors are ideal for wildlife and bird photographers due to 2x crop, we want the OM-5 II to include these features as well for the mid-tier range users.
- A better processor: A fast processor will help users to shoot at a higher frame rate. The OM5 can shoot 10fps, so we hope that with the new camera, we get a higher frame rate. A TruePic X image processor will be ideal.
- A new sensor: The OM5 has the same sensor as the E-M1 III, which is now around eight years old. An improved sensor will help to retain detail, and get better images in low-light as well.
- A focus on fun: cameras these days are getting a bit stale.
The OM-5 II has the chance to improve itself, rather than just being a rehashed model. It remains to be seen whether the company actually takes a heed of this when we finally see the launch.
