We’ve all been there — one day we’re super hyped to explore our town and its surrounds with a camera in tow. Then, all of a sudden, we just don’t feel as excited. Give it a bit more time and we just lost all interest and motivation to even pick up a camera. What happened? And more importantly, what do we do when we suddenly find everything boring, uninteresting, and unworthy of being photographed?
In the video above, UK-based photographer and videographer Mike Chudley talks about taking interesting photos in boring places. He begins by sharing that he usually gets comments saying he’s “has it better” because he can shoot in Central London, unlike those who live in sleepy towns. However, Mike believes that photography is interesting wherever you go.
So, to prove his point, he first takes us around some locations that aren’t the typical spots you’d go for when doing street photography. For him, it’s all about observation and trying to find the little nuances of a location.
Next, he shares his thoughts on finding motivation to shoot in places that you think aren’t worth the shot. His quick answer is to look at the works of photography greats, and examine how they were taking photos of what’s interesting for them, not what’s interesting for other people. “You’ve got to find something that resonates with you,” he aptly put.
