I take celebrity portraits for a living, this is how I make eye catching photographs [Mildly NSFW]

Few photographers have redefined celebrity portraiture quite like Vijat Mohindra. His style is a bold, hyper-saturated aesthetic that blends surrealism, 80s glam, and contemporary digital culture. LA-based celebrity photographer Vijat has become the go-to artist for capturing icons like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Megan Fox, and Miley Cyrus.

His work sits at the intersection of pop culture, high fashion, and fine art, while his technical mastery of lighting, colour, and set design has cemented his status as one of the most in-demand photographers of the moment. DIYP had the privilege of diving into Vijat’s creative world, exploring his inspirations, his process, and his unique perspective on the future of visual storytelling in an ever-evolving digital age.

DIYP: Can you tell us about your background and photographic journey? How did you end up doing what you’re doing now?

Vijat: I began my journey in photography during my childhood, always fascinated by surreal visuals and pop culture. Over time, I developed my own style characterized by an ultra-modernist and hyper-synthetic aesthetic, drawing inspiration from past decades like the ’80s and ’90s. Collaborating with artists and brands that resonate with this energy has propelled my career forward, leading to the establishment of The Powder Room Studio LA, a space that embodies this very aesthetic and offers creatives a place to bring their own visions to life.

DIYP: How did you develop your bold, colourful style, and what inspires your unique approach to colour and composition?

Vijat: My style evolved from a deep appreciation for pop culture, fashion, and monochromatic visuals. Influences like Salvador Dali and Maurizio Cattelan have shaped my vision, inspiring me to create imagery that’s both saturated and surreal. I utilize colour to amplify moods and emotions, aiming to craft visuals that are not only eye-catching but also as different as possible from the trends that every other photographer is following.

DIYP: What role does storytelling play in your photography, and how do you ensure that each portrait captures the essence of your subject?

Vijat: Storytelling is central to my work. Even within highly stylized settings, I strive to convey a narrative that reflects the subject’s persona. By creating environments where they can be free to express themselves, I aim to capture images that are both authentic and larger-than-life, allowing them to shine like superstars.

DIYP: You’ve worked with iconic figures like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, and Doja Cat. How do you approach collaborating with such high-profile subjects to create images that feel authentic and groundbreaking?

Vijat: Collaboration and trust are key. These artists have a strong understanding of their image, and I bring my vision to complement theirs. Through open dialogue and mutual artistic collaboration, we create a creative exchange that results in dynamic, authentic imagery that resonates with both the talent and my style.

DIYP: Is there one shoot that really stands out to you? Can you tell us a little about that?

Vijat: One memorable shoot was with Miley Cyrus for the cover of WSJ Magazine. It was a shoot where I did not have any assistants or sets. It was just me and my camera at her house with amazing clothes that her stylist curated—she did her own hair and makeup, which I always think looks the most AMAZING! Moments like these, where everything aligns perfectly, are what make photography so fun and real.

DIYP: What camera and lighting gear do you typically use?

Vijat: I typically shoot with medium-format camera systems that allow for grain-free high-resolution images. My lighting setups are crafted to achieve the crisp, poppy characteristics. I love using all strobe lights and rarely any natural light. I love hard light modifiers like the pro-foto magnum mixed with soft source fill light for that beautiful hard but soft look.

DIYP: Can you walk us through your creative process—from concept to execution—for a typical shoot?

Vijat: It all starts with a concept inspired by various elements like music, fashion, or pop culture. I then design sets and lighting that align with this vision, ensuring every detail contributes to the overall narrative. On set, fostering a collaborative and energetic atmosphere is crucial, as it allows the subject’s personality to be showcased, resulting in authentic and dynamic images.

DIYP: With the rise of digital tools and AI in photography, how do you see the role of photographers changing in the not-so-distant future?

Vijat: While technology continues to evolve, the core of photography—capturing a unique perspective—remains unchanged. Digital tools and AI can enhance the creative process, but the photographer’s vision and ability to connect with subjects are irreplaceable. Embracing these advancements while staying true to one’s artistic voice is the way forward.

DIYP: You also direct video and motion work. How does that differ from shooting stills? Is your approach different at all?

Vijat: Directing motion work introduces elements like pacing and movement, adding layers to storytelling. While the visual aesthetics remain consistent with my photographic style, motion allows for a different exploration of narratives, engaging viewers in a similarly immersive way.

DIYP: Do you have any interesting projects coming up that you can tell us about?

Vijat: I’m continually exploring new creative avenues, including upcoming collaborations and projects at The Powder Room Studio LA. While specifics are under wraps, I’m excited about pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and providing platforms for other creatives to be inspired and do the same.
