If you’ve been into photography or video for more than five minutes, you’ve certainly heard of Pelican. They’re the industry standard cases for storing and transporting your gear. They’re built to be rugged and handle anything that can be thrown at them – even baggage handlers.
Pelican seems to be changing tactics, though. The company has announced its new Aegis range (buy here) of backpacks and accessories, designed for style and comfort rather than pure function. Yeah, that’s right. They’re soft cases!
A Familiar Evolution: ATX TRVL Suitcases
Pelican describes its ATX TRVL line as an evolution of its iconic hard cases, and the similarities are obvious. Made with proprietary HPX polymer resin, these cases are “waterproof, dustproof, and crushproof.” In short, like standard Pelican cases, they’re built to withstand just about anything.
What sets them apart from the models you might be used to is a new level of mobility. They feature Hinomoto Multi-Directional 360° Spinner Wheels, which promise smooth navigation through airports or rocky trails.

- Pelican ATX Hardside Check-In Suitcase (25″) ($599.95)
- Pelican ATX Hardside Check-In Suitcase (30″) ($699.95)
With sizes up to 90L and weight ranging from 12.1 to 20.5 lb, the ATX TRVL cases might not be the lightest option, but they offer great protection for important gear. And with multiple colours and sizes available, they cater to a wide range of needs.
Versatility in Focus: HYBRID TRVL AEGIS Series
The HYBRID TRVL AEGIS series leans more into lightweight adaptability. The Rolling Duffels pair a compression-moulded EVA lid with softer sides to keep weight down. These are available in capacities from 50L to a massive 120L.
They’re practical for carrying less fragile items while shaving off a few pounds compared to the ATX cases. Sizes include 22″ (carry-on compliant), 28″, and 32″.

For those who prefer to travel light, the new Travel Backpacks (18L, 25L, and 45L) are worth a look. They feature durable 500D Cordura fabric, sternum straps, padded laptop compartments, and EVA-molded front lids. So, while they’re soft, they’re still protective. At less than 3 lbs each, they’re a comfortable choice for photographers or adventurers on the move.
