The A7 V feels immediately familiar if you’ve used any recent Sony camera, but the refinements are noticeable. The grip is deeper, the buttons are more tactile, and the overall build quality has been improved. Sony listened to user feedback, and it shows.

Image Quality

The new 36.2MP back-side illuminated sensor is a significant upgrade from the A7 IV’s 33MP chip. Dynamic range has improved, particularly in the shadows, where you can now recover detail that would have been lost on previous generations.

Heat management has been significantly improved. We recorded 4K60p continuously for over an hour without any overheating warnings. The 8K mode does have limits, but 30 minutes is achievable in normal conditions.

Battery Life

Sony has addressed one of the A7 series’ historical weaknesses. The new NP-FZ100 Plus battery (sold separately) extends shooting to approximately 800 shots per charge. With the standard battery, expect around 530 shots.
