The Best Sony Macro Lens May Get a Refresh Soon

Macro lenses are important for photographers who love to depict the unseen wonders of the world. The most important features of such a lens are extra reach and weather sealing, which help to get the best of both worlds. Sony has a few offerings but it appears the company is trying to expand their range with a new addition: 100mm f2.8. Here is a look at what it is and what to expect.

First reported by Sony Alpha Rumours, the new lens is a new iteration in the GM OSS series. Said to launch next week, the report notes the lens is set to replace the 90mm f2.8 G OSS macro, which was launched in 2015. Here is a look at the leaked images:

Based on the report, you can see the aperture ring, AF switch, full-time DF, and also the iris lock. These changes suggest that Sony aims to offer a tactile experience, while also getting better weather sealing. These features also will help macro shooters get the best field. The report also suggests that the Sony macro lens can reach up to $2000.

At the moment, there are no specifications of the lens. But, the focal range certainly has a few competitor. For instance, TTartisan, Samyang, Sigma and Laowa are a few companies that have similar offerings, but at a much lower price. In our review of the Laowa 90mm f2.8 2x lens, we wrote, “That mixed with the f2.8 and the 90mm makes bokeh so smooth that backgrounds often become a solid color. The rainbow-colored, streaky flare adds even more ways that this lens can help create photos that stand out in a feed.” And all of this for under $500.

While third party lenses lack weather sealing, they make up in terms of the performance. And for various young photographers, that’s what matters.. However, if Sony can reduce the price a tad but, while giving all the beefinits, many photographers will invest in the new 100mm.

We must wait and see what Sony has in store. For those using the 90mm, this lens, if launched, can be a catch. It can also be helpful for hybrid shooters, or those who like to make portraits with it. As with any other first-party lenses, Sony has a long way to go. Unless they try something unique, they may have to face rising competition.
