Canon has launched two full-frame cameras in 2024, with the company shifting its focus to video and compact cameras this year. The latter two are important, but full-frame and APS-C devices for still photography are just as necessary. With a variety of cameras in need of an update, we believe three models should receive an update by next year. Here’s why.
The cameras we are looking forward to seeing soon include the successor to the R7, a digital version of the AE-1, and the G3 X II. The company has not said anything officially, but there are reports about what the R7 II could be. The original model was launched in 2022, with 2026 marking 3 three years of anniversary. The AE-1 was a film camera, while the G3X was originally introduced in 2015.
Each of the cameras has performed exceptionally well and has been highly popular among photographers. For instance, the R7 was one of the best budget performers of its time. The same goes for the other two. As the company focuses on both large and small sensors, it can attract more people to choose Canon over Sony or Fujifilm.
The R7 II Can Go After Sony
The Canon R7 is a phenomenal camera, but as time passes, the device ages. It’s about time the company launches the device with a few major improvements. For instance, reports suggest they will remove the mechanical shutter, which can further enhance the device for fast-paced photography. There is also a new LCD, which will not flip out.
Some other features that can help the device compete against Sony include:
- 33MP stacked sensor
- 40 fps e-shutter only
- 8.5-stop IBIS (a pump up from 5-stops)
- Pre-burst cache
- 4K/120 10-bit C-Log 3
- CFexpress Type B
The R7 offered great image quality, multiple exposure modes (only with JOEF), and excellent weather resistance. Thus, the R7 II has to take a leap.
Canon AE-1 Can be The RE-1 for Content Creator
The original AE-1 was launched in 1976, and it sold over 5 million units. This was also the first SLR to feature a microprocessor, have a brass plate, and a sound of the shutter that people still crave. With most companies pursuing a retro aesthetic, the RE-1 could be the camera that competes with Fujifilm. The latter has complete control over the smaller sensor segment, but they have had challenges with production. If Canon puts itself out there, it can easily draw more users.
There have been reports that the company is considering a retro device, which will have a 24MP sensor like the R6, alongside in-body image stabilization. If the company manages to keep the camera priced under $2000, they will get people who were interested in the Nikon Zf and the Panasonic S9 to switch over. Some other features that they can include:
- Silver-chrome brass top/bottom
- ASA dial to work with ISO
- Hybrid viewfinder
- Mechanical mode dial with AE-1 font
- Silent leaf-style e-curtain for video use
- A slim 28 mm f2.8 pancake lens that resembles the older 40mm STM
The G3 X II Can Be the Answer to Travel Zooms
Launched in 2015, the G3X featured a 24-600mm equiv. F2.8-5.6 lens, all packed inside a body weighing less than 800g. The camera featured a built-in ND filter, a touch LCD with a tilting function, and numerous features optimized for video use. Since then, Sony introduced the RX10 IV, Panasonic released its own FZ1000 II with 4K capabilities, and more recently, Nikon launched its own P1100. Canon needs to get its own compact zoom camera for travel users who do not want to rely on their phones. And so, they must include the following:
- 1-inch 30 MP stacked sensor
- 1/200s read-out, with no jello at 600mm
- DIGIC Accelerator engine for RAW and videos
- Phase-detect Dual Pixel AF
- RF-S 24-600 mm f/2.8-5.8 built in
- Active IBIS rated 7 stops
The buzz around R7 II and RE-1 has been around since this year, but it remains to be seen when they will be launched. However, if we get all three by next year, they will certainly help the company to bounce back faster. But until then, we just have to be patient.
