As compact cameras return, companies are working to introduce newer devices. For instance, Canon launched the Powershot V1, followed by the Nikon P1100, the Fujifilm X-Half, and Sony’s own RX1R Mk III. Now, it seems that one compact camera was not enough for Canon, and they will be introducing another model this month. However, it won’t be an addition to the Powershot G or V lineup, but another cost-effective model. Let’s have a look.

According to Canon Rumors, Canon will introduce a refreshed version of the ELPH model. This will be a new camera, like the ELPH 360 HS, which offers 12x zoom but is small and adaptable. The ELPH 360 HS was launched in 2016 and does not feature a viewfinder.

Canon Elph 360 HS

For the uninformed, the ELPH 360 HS has repeatedly been seen on Google Trends, and it was also included on our list of compact cameras that are popular with Gen Z and millennials. The ELPH has its charm due to the variety of colors, as well as the small sensor and portable experience. The camera features a 1/2.3-inch 20MP CMOS sensor, a 25-300mm (35mm equivalent) lens, and a DIGIC 4+ image processor. Some other notable features include a 3.0-inch 461k-dot LCD screen, full HD video recording at 30fps, image stabilisation, ISO up to 3200, and a burst rate of 7fps. You also get WiFi and modes such as hybrid auto and story highlight.

The original camera was designed for an average person, someone who wants something better than a phone but not a DSLR. Similarly, with more people wanting a new compact camera, the ELPH 360 HS seems a better choice than a Powershot V1. In fact, one could say that Canon may want to compete with Kodak, as they already have the best-selling camera with them: the Pixpro series. Even on Amazon, you will find Kodak in the best-selling segment. Keeping in mind that an average user will want something simple and cheap, Kodak’s series meets this demand. And this has paid off. Canon may also want to enter this segment, since that is how they have been getting the highest share in the market.

While we aren’t sure of the specifications, the new camera ideally should be closer to Kodak’s price point of under $200. After all, the cheaper the camera, the more buyers show interest. The launch is said to be in the coming week. So we just have to wait and see how this unfolds. Perhaps, the new ELPH model will help Canon to push the market. However, this is likely to not be a device meant for serious enthusiats.
