The Canon R6 series has been quite popular amongst content creators, professional photographers, and serious enthusiasts. The Canon R6 II has been quite a workhorse in this domain, with features such as Scene Intelligent Auto mode and Hybrid Auto mode helping one to get the best out of their shooting experience. Although the model is two years old, reports of its success, the Canon R6 III, have been circulating for a while. It now appears the successor model will feature a different sensor, one that will be liked by many.
The Sensor Power Up
According to Canon Rumors, reports of the Canon R6 III increasing the resolution of the sensors have been revealed by a few sources. The publication states that the upcoming models will not feature the same 24MP sensor as the older versions. Instead, photographers can rejoice as it will be pumped up to 30MP or 32MP, with the readout speed being between the Canon R1 and the R5 Mk II.
Since the Canon R6 II was perfect for weddings, portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, commercial, real estate, and street photography, the R6 III will certainly be a better update for these genre users. A higher resolution also means that you get plenty to play with when cropping or even getting better image quality in low light. In fact, the extra pump can always be ideal for gathering more details.
New Viewfinder
The R6 II features a 0.5-inch 3,690,000-dot, 0.76x magnification electronic viewfinder. On our test, we found the EVF to be pleasing to look through. However, it now seems that the company wants to expand more. The report states that the R6 III will feature a “new type” of electronic viewfinder, as well as a “new flippy mechanism” for the LCD screen. While the former model’s LCD was quite responsive and featured an easy-to-use menu system, we aren’t exactly sure how this can be further improved. We leave it up to Canon, and we hope that they surprise us with the additional design changes.
Increased Price?
When the R6 II was launched, it was priced at $2499, without any lens. This price tag is a bit hefty for content creators and budding photographers looking to buy their first full-frame camera. So, with changes such as sensor and viewfinder, the R6 III will likely cost more. If you take tariffs into consideration, then a minimum of a 10% increase. As a result, if the upcoming Canon camera exceeds this tag, then there are other options such as the Sony a7 IV, which will cost far less.
We also must remember that Canon has not been doing very well recently. So, if they expect the R6 III to shine, the camera has to offer more than incremental updates. Or, better yet, instead of a whole new camera, just launch better firmware. The Canon R6 III needs to be far better than a few updates for content creators, or else the company will certainly face more challenges with users.
