Amongst the various cameras today, the 35mm rangefinder cameras are quite popular. One of the reasons is that one gets a chance to create images with a nostalgic device, and one that offers distinct images. One such device is the Contax G2, launched in 1996. Despite being almost three decades old, the device is set to see a price hike soon. Here is a look at it.
Contax G2 was launched by Kyocera, and today, it is one of the most sought-after devices. However, per a new post by Reddit on r/AnalogCommuity, singer Sabrina Carpenter was recently spotted with a 35mm camera on the streets of New York. This sighting has sparked discussion, highlighting how the device can now make the camera more expensive. The Contax G2 is a popular camera among film photographers, but with Carpenter seen with the device, it can make the analogue camera more expensive on the market.
For the uninitiated, the Contax G2 features a titanium build and is equipped with a Carl Zeiss lens. The device has high-speed infrared autofocus and a shutter speed of 1/6000s. There is also a 4fps motor drive, a flash sync of 1/200s, and it weighs just 560g. The Contax G2’s other feature that people appreciate is the viewfinder, which automatically zooms when the right lens is attached. This makes it one of the most advanced viewfinders ever made.

Now, with Sabrina Carpenter, a pop icon, being spotted with the camera can also encourage young users to pursue the camera. For instance, Gen Zs who want a film camera with aesthetic value. So far, on eBay, the camera is already priced between $1,800 – $2,500. The price had dropped a decade ago, but with the 45mm f2 Planar lens, it can cost about $2,500 to $3,500 on average. The black color variant is the most expensive option, as it is difficult to find.
Carptener is not the only celebrity to use Contax. Kendall Jenner also caused a spike in demand for Contax T2/T3 models and Olympus Mju-II. With Carpenter being an even more popular celebrity, it is possible that Contax G2 may face a shortage in demand because of the hype. The camera is already a holy grail for many film enthusiasts, and so, it seems like the right time for many photographers to get one for themselves. Or they may have to wait until the hype dies down.
