A few photography enthusiasts have been interested in creating new, unique camera designs. For instance, from DIY Lego cameras to the Ticka watch camera, there have been marvels in the imaging world that are pathbreaking and unique. Joining this list is another camera inventor, who has created an analog camera that has a very different approach to film photography. What is it all about? Read more to find out.
Ethan Moses, aka Cameradactyl, is a beloved figure in the camera community who has created a newer version of the existing format, but with a twist. As part of his recent creation, he has unveiled a new 4×5 TLR (twin-lens reflex), which is unlike any other. It can create and shoot 106 images per roll!
Moses has spent about 15 months developing this CAMERADACTYL Master System, which has a different approach to film photography. This system includes a paper-based roll format, a distinct design, and a unique processing method. This film photography format also uses color photo paper, which is similar to the process used for printing family photos at a pharmacy. However, instead of printing the image, the paper now directly captures the image in-camera. As a result, this process can hold over 100 photographs per roll, which includes a custom-built roll-to-roll dip and dunk processor that creates the pictures through an RA-4 reversal process. For the unversed, this is a very uncommon practice for in-camera shooting, which allows for creating vivid, textured prints.

The inspiration behind this camera system is derived from the classic photo booth, which has been a part of analog photography for over 100 years. The way the photo booth would develop images through a series of chemicals became a foundation idea for Moses’ Master System. With the help of large-format photography, direct positive processes, and the nature of photo books, Moses created a system that shot strips of images continuously.
The CAMERADACTYL Master System, thus, reveals a significant leap forward in film photography and a 4×5 twin reflex camera. This is a great way to ensure people get involved with the medium more while also reviving the craze we saw with photo booths back in the 1950s and 1960s. Furthermore, the blend of new and old styles creates a one-of-a-kind experience for photographers, especially the young generation, that is interested in reliving a nostalgic era.
Moses is also selling some test images and physical products from this system on his website. When he sells $2000 worth of prints, he will launch one file or files for free download. When he reaches $300,000, he will release the complete set of files to print the CAMERADACTYL Master System, along with detailed printing and assembly instructions on YouTube. In the end, Moses created more photo machines, but now, he aims to share his creation with everyone.
