When DJI announced its series of cost-effective workhorse drones, many photographers were quite excited. With each iteration, the company continued to reach new heights, with the newly launched DJI Mavic 4 Pro adding yet another gem to the company’s portfolio. With a 100MP 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad sensor, the company achieved the impossible. It now appears, the next drone in line is the DJI Mini 5 Pro which is an ideal option for people on a budget. Here’s a look at what it can have and when it will launch.
First reported by DroneXL and Photo Rumors, DJI may launch the new drone this year, giving a good two years or so difference between the Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro. Reports suggest sources have nailed down the date to be August 7, but as with the issues with China vs the United States, it is possible that the said launch can be pushed. Per the reports, the DJI Mini 5 Pro will feature the following:
- Advanced Obstacle Avoidance
- LiDAR
- Upgraded camera and gimbal design (perhaps, 1-inch sensor)
- Larger motors
- Larger battery
- 25km range
- Under 249 grams
- Perhaps, a fixed propellers for less noise
- FCC filing
We’re most curious about how the camera will be. A 1-inch sensor seems logical, but we’re always craving more.
As details are scarce, it is hard to comment on whether the new drone will wow many DJI users. However, with Mavic 4 Pro’s specs, it was evident that the company knows what its clients want. So, we may just not have to worry that much.
In fact, in our review of the Mini 4 Pro, we were quite impressed by its performance. The drone was easy to use, has great object detection, good manual exposure controls, and the RAW and JPEGs were simply colorful and brilliant. As a pocket-friendly option, it did outshine in many areas. As we said in our review, “The DJI Mini 4 Pro is the first Mini-series drone with omnidirectional object detection. Considering the Mini series is aimed at beginners, that’s a pretty significant update. The other upgrade is that the transmission system is stronger, so the drone can fly further without losing connection to the controller.”
DJI Mini 5 Pro will be a blessing, but due to tariffs, the device could cost slightly more than usual. At the moment, July 9 is said to be the day when President Donald Trump decides on reciprocal tariffs. Currently, China is taxed at 30% on imports to the US, but if no deal is reached soon, it may go higher with time. So, until then, let’s see how everything plays out.
