Recently, we reported that Canon is going to launch a new series of APS-C cameras for varied users. An example was the Canon EOS RV, a hybrid camera that meets the demands of photographers and content creators. While more updates are expected with the APS-C lineups, there are also reports of new RF-S lenses from the company to go along with these devices. What should you expect? Let’s get into it.
According to Canon Rumors, the company is going to be releasing about three to four RF-S lenses this year. In addition, this is also going to be the year for Canon’s APS-C format, alongside the launches of Canon EOS R6 Mark III and the highly anticipated retro camera.
Coming back to APS-C lenses, Canon is predicted to launch two RF-S power zoom lenses, which will be wide-angle and standard. New fast prime lenses are also included, but details are scarce. However, the much-favored EF-M 32mm f1.4 STM is anticipated to be available in the RF-S mount.
In addition, one can expect a f2.8 constant aperture zoom lens. However, the article states it could be like the EF 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. Sources close to the publication revealed that the lens will be wider than the 17mm version, like 15mm or so. If that is the case, then the RF-S lineup will have a 35mm equivalent of 24-70mm lens.
There is also the long wait for autofocus tilt-shift lenses, which are set to release soon, but so far, there is no official update from Canon on the same. The lenses that people really want to see are:
- Canon TS-R 14mm f4L
- Canon TS-R 24mm f3.5L
- Canon RF 200-500mm f4L IS USM (with a teleconverter)
Canon has previously stated that it wants to release about eight lenses a year in the future. If the lenses mentioned so far are launched this year, then only one or two more lenses need to be announced to meet the company’s plans.
Asrophotgraphers, too, have been using a fast ultra-wide L prime lens, but the company has not yet revealed its decision about its future other than patents. However, there are hopes a lens like this will come true in 2025, as sources have hinted at a launch in the second half of 2025.
Our hope, however, is that their APS-C lineup has better weather sealing, as Canon’s non-L series tends to lack that to meet the affordability criteria. This way, those who buy a Canon product in hopes of getting good quality and brand loyalty should not lose out on longevity. This is where the company can truly stand out against the third-party lens manufacturers. The latter may be able to come in terms of image quality and price, but they can’t guarantee long-term use.
APS-C cameras have performed really well for Canon in the past year, so it makes sense why the company wants to launch a slew of new cameras and lenses. However, I hope that in terms of chasing numbers, they do not lose out on build quality again.
