Sony launched only one flagship photography-related camera last year, the a1 II, and this year, they introduced the high-end compact camera, the RX1R Mark III. Unlike other brands, Sony seems to be taking it slow, perhaps because it is equally invested in film cameras. However, reports about the highly awaited Sony A7 V have been making rounds on the internet, and a new article suggests that Sony may launch the device to be more cost-effective than some of Nikon’s cameras. How is that possible? Let’s find out.
Per a new report from Sony Alpha Rumors, sources close to the publication said that the new Sony device will be cheaper than the Z8. Here’s their quote:

The Sony A7V uses the same (revised) fast sensor that can do oversampling 4k 60 from 8k 60 etc. but now with perfect Sony AI autofocus and open third party lenses and better battery. So this is the sensor A7V will use and it will be cheaper than Z8.
Hope they use good cooling.
The A7 IV was launched four years ago, while the Z8 was released two years ago. Even today, the camera costs over $4000, while the A7 IV, when it was announced, was just for $2,100. With new tariffs, the A7 V could be more expensive, but since the camera is often said to have an old sensor, it would be wise for Sony to keep the margin lower. Since the A7 series is more for hybrid users, they have plenty of options to choose from today. For instance, the Canon R6 II, the Canon R5, or the Panasonic S5 II. However, the A7 IV, in some ways, is in a league of its own. And so, if people are looking at just 30MP cameras, their search will narrow down.
However, considering that the A7 IV is said to have the following features, things just may work out for them:
- A 44MP 20fps non-stacked sensor
- The body is the same as a1 II, as well as the screen
- AI chip for processing
- Better EVF when compared to a7 IV
- Better heat management
We aren’t sure what is holding back Sony from launching more cameras, but one can assume that they may be focused on research and development. The company has already given us some truly great mirrorless cameras, even before Canon or Nikon, and now, they seem to have hit a plateau. Perhaps, a retro offering like the Zf could shake up the camera industry. However, until then, we have to wait and see what they have in store for the A7 V.
