Rumors and leaks can either excite brand loyalists, or they can divide them. Canon’s latest image leak of an upcoming camera is the former. From the looks of it, Canon is now finding new ways to make its camera bodies smaller and smaller, which is something many loyalists would prefer. But how long this sentiment will be shared by many, we have to see. Without further ado, here is a look at the leaked image of the Canon RV, Sony’s competitor.
According to Mirrorless Rumors, the leaked image showcases a white camera body, which is similar to Sony’s A5100 and other smaller cameras like the Sony ZV-E10. In addition to this image, the article reports that Canon will launch a Canon R6 III model by summer, while they will introduce a retro camera by autumn.
Canon Rumors further adds that the camera is similar to the PowerShot V1, which was unveiled recently. They also added that this is one of three models we will see in the new RF camera lineup by 2025. Some of the things one can guess from the image are the following:
- The camera is likely to have a zoom lever, thanks to the switch placed near the power button.
- We will see new lenses for this particular lineup, which may also have power zoom.
- A hot shoe, just like the PowerShot V series.
- There is also likely to be an articulating screen since the device is inspired by Sony cameras.
- Standard mode dial and top control dial.
- There is a button at the bottom near the lens, but we aren’t sure what it could be.
- Lack of viewfinder, as seen in other video cameras.
- The lens could be similar to PowerShot V1, which means it could be a 16-50mm equivalent lens.
However, unlike the Sony models, this device is slightly thicker. At the moment, no specifications for the model have been revealed, so we aren’t sure who the target audience for the device is. But if it’s trying to compete with the Sony ZV series, then it is possible this is yet another video-oriented camera by Canon. Since we were told the Canon RC and R50 V are going to launch, perhaps the RV could just be one of them.
If the camera is supposed to compete with Sony in any way, then Canon will have to offer truly unique specs and a price point that even Sony isn’t offering. However, with more focus on video, Canon needs to figure out a way to give us a camera that will help the photography community just as much. The PowerShot V1 was more video-centric, making the photo community feel like a second thought for the company. As we had seen with the EOS R5 Mk II, the camera simply didn’t really make sense to us, while the EOS R1, hailing to be the best Canon option, struggles to focus on people of color. If Nikon and Sony are able to be more inclusive, then why not Canon?
In no way are we throwing shade on Canon, but we are asking critical questions as to why they are leaving the photo community behind. If you want to be at the top of the market, you also need to provide features that your competitors cannot create. If not, you are only surviving by creating models that are variations of existing devices, and no one wants that in 2025.
