Over the past few months, we have reported that Canon will launch three new mirrorless R series cameras, a rumored macro lens, and even an APS-C camera in 2025. While we haven’t heard much from the company since the announcement of EOS R1 and EOS R5 II, there is still hope that the company is working on devices that will help photographers further. However, a new report states that the company will release a device that may upset some photography enthusiasts: the Canon EOS RC. Why? We will tell you in a minute.
What is Canon Working on?
According to Canon Rumors, the company is rumored to launch a new R series camera called RC. The report comes from a trusted source who always has an impeccable record for such stories. While there is not much information at the moment about the camera, Canon Rumors speculates that the RC is likely to be a “hybrid camera.” This means, yet again, that Canon may prioritize video functions more than photography.
The report also adds that the company will launch a Sony FX competitor. However, it is unclear whether the RC will be that or if there is a second camera that will battle with the FX series. The report does not disclose whether the camera is a full-frame camera or an APS-C. This comes at a time when Canon is rumored to launch an APS-C camera, but there are also hopes there will be a full-frame launch.
The report further adds that an EOS M6 Mk III may also be in the making, something which photographers may be delighted to see.
In another report, the Japanese website Asobinet believes that the RC could also reflect Canon’s shift to its EOS cinema lineup. At the same time, they state that a “C” variant in Sony is often a compact camera. For instance, the a7C II is an entry-level, full-frame, compact camera. Given Canon’s past, however, it’s likely to be the former. The Canon EOS R5 had a cinema variant called the EOS R5c, afterall.
It’s Too Early To Jump To Conclusions About the Canon EOS RC
There is a possibility that Canon focuses on a video camera. After all, they have an entire cinema line-up and would want to compete with Sony and Fujifilm in this department. However, since they launched only two photography-centric cameras last year, the chances are they may first focus on that domain. For instance, the EOS R50 was one of the better-selling cameras and was affordable for the masses. It also proves that people need an APS-C as much as they require a good full-frame camera. And so, the EOS M6 Mk III‘s launch would make much more sense this year. Yet, it remains to be seen what kind of upgrade the new APS-C segment can bring, especially considering how its sensors are a major challenge. And that is just the start.
However, there is also the demand for a high-resolution compact camera, just like Nikon’s ZF, a beautifully crafted piece of technology. If Canon does not take a more photo-centric approach this year, especially after the shipment of EOS R1, then the company will likely face a challenge from its competitor. In the past, the company had some truly innovative cameras and lenses in its portfolio. But now, it appears that they are trying to pivot from their roots, which may not have the best results. We believe the answer to Canon’s portfolio expansion should not be limited to video and cinema alone. Rather, they should take a close look at the consumer camera market again, and they will likely find a solution to their camera woes.
We totally hope that a retro Canon camera is still in the works.
