Canon has some extraordinary cameras and lenses in this vast portfolio. The company has launched models such as the 5D series and the 1DX series, as well as popular lenses such as the Canon EF 16-35mm f4L IS USM and Canon EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM. With the new mirrorless mount, the company has been scaling new excellence. It now appears that the company is trying to achieve the same heights with RF lenses, and an example of this is a new patent for wide-angle lenses with a bright aperture. Here’s a quick look.

According to Asobinet, Canon released patent number P2025109405 on July 25. The patent showcases a variety of new lenses, including 24mm f1.4, 28mm f1.2, 35mm f1.4, and 50mm f1.4 lenses. According to the design, these lenses will help with focus breathing, a phenomenon that causes focal length changes when focusing. Here is a look at the new designs:

Example 1

  • Focal length: 24.72
  • F-number: 1.44
  • Half angle of view: 37.03
  • Image height: 18.64
  • Total length: 117.81
  • Back Focus: 17.20

Example 2

Patent for 28mm
  • Focal length: 27.62
  • F-number: 1.24
  • Half angle of view: 34.33
  • Image height: 18.86
  • Total length: 124.66
  • Back focal length: 13.54

Example 3

  • Focal length: 48.61
  • F-number: 1.44
  • Half angle of view: 23.99
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Total length: 129.72
  • Back Focus: 15.98

Example 4

  • Focal length: 34.00
  • F-number: 1.44
  • Half angle of view: 30.34
  • Image height: 19.90
  • Total length: 129.94
  • Back Focus: 15.50

The lens configuration is different than the existing systems, and they seem to be in development for the VCM lens series. For the uninitiated, the Voice Coil Motor (VCM) lenses are smaller and lighter than the normal L series lenses, and they are also half the price. An example is the difference between Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L USM and RF 35mm F1.4 VCM. The USM lenses give spectacular results, but they also cost a lot. As for the VCM lenses, you get one stop smaller aperture, but the price is half of the original (in this case $1500 instead of $3000). This makes it easy for different photographers to simply get a device that is cost-effective and also has the same performance as the other L-series lenses.

Either way, if Canon is thinking of launching new wide-angle lenses, it must remember that innovation and character are what people are going for. A sterile lens can be made by another third-party brand, and it will cost 1/3rd of what Canon is offering. But if you wish to hook photographers to your optics, then in addition to weight, size, the lenses have to offer exceptional quality and weather sealing. In 2025, it is not too much to ask for. Perhaps, the new patent is just research work, and Canon is changing its strategy for the better. If not, then there are other competitors who will take away your loyal base.
