Nikon has been having a great year so far. The company has launched multiple products, and they have been reaching new heights. They have also introduced some spectacular lenses for mirrorless mounts, and it appears that they are already discontinuing those that don’t seem particularly beneficial. According to a new report, this includes a zoom lens, which was recently introduced: the Z 24-70mm.
According to Asobinet, the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S has been discontinued at various Japanese retailers. This includes the MAP camera, Yodobashi Camera, and Camera Kitamura. Although there has been no official announcement, the lens is reportedly available while stocks last. On the Nikon USA website, the lens is available for purchase, with no official announcement about the discontinuation.
For the uninitiated, the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S was launched in 2019, which helped to complete the trio with the 35mm f1.8 prime and the 50mm f1.8. The reason for this is unknown, but it could be attributed to the launch of the successor model, the 24-70mm f2.8 S II. The new lens offers major upgrades, including an internal zoom feature that the original lens lacked. At the same time, it is lighter, has better weather resistance, and the filter thread is smaller (77mm from 82mm). However, it is also $1000 more expensive than the original.
Considering there is a better lens after almost five years, it is natural that many people will undoubtedly opt for the latter. After all, the technology has aged, and with newer cameras, the firmware may not be enough to help the lens meet the newer demands. However, it is said to carry the same image quality as the original 24-70mm. As we had stated in our review of the 2019 version, “The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70 f2.8 S’s hefty price is further justified by the lens’s ability to produce vibrant yet color-accurate images, the consistent sharpness throughout its focal range, and its ability to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions. For many photographers who have made the switch to Nikon’s mirrorless Z mount, their wait for a fast and reliable workhorse zoom lens is finally over.”
It appears that Nikon is focusing on producing lenses that can make a difference. This strategy can be beneficial, as they do not wish to invest in an outdated product. Perhaps, with this new strategy, they can meet the market demand and avoid further delays in sales. It remains to be seen how far this can take them, perhaps, to help them get more users than before.
