Sony launched the a7 and the a7R lineup, which have seen multiple iterations over the years. The company released the a7R V in 2022, which leaves one wondering about the Sony a7 V. Reports stated the company will delay the a7 successor due to Trump’s tariffs and production challenges. However, as we wait, here are a few things that we want from the Sony a7 V. As long as the company gives us these features, the delay will be worth the wait.
Sensor
The Sony a7 series used a 24MP full-frame sensor, with the a7 IV bumping this up to 33MP. The camera is a step below the a7R series, so our hope is that the resolution is at least between 40 and 50MP. This is because the a7R V already has a 61MP sensor, so something larger than 33MP could give better flexibility. In addition, the camera has to be better than the a7c II, which is already pretty much like the a7 IV.
In addition, we felt the high ISO performance could have been better with the a7 IV, so naturally, its success must also improve on this. At the same time, getting an IBIS of more than 5.5 stops could be helpful.
Video
Since the a7 IV is for both hybrid shooters, the camera comes with 4K 60fps with no crop. This way, one gets better image quality with a wider field of view. There must also be a 4K/120fps shooting option for slow motion, which can benefit users. Maybe full HD video at 240fps too.
Autofocus
The a7c II and the a7R V both now feature an AI-driven autofocus system, which also helps with tracking capabilities. The A7 V, thus, also needs to include a faster autofocus (and modes like insects), which could be done with the help of an AI chip that can handle the processing. If tracking becomes better, and so does its accuracy, it can help those who are looking for their first full-frame camera.
More Frame Rates
The a7 IV tops out at 10fps, so a faster frame rate will be helpful to those who are keen on street or wildlife photography. Instead, we must get at least 20fps since the a9 III can shoot up to 120fps. That is the least we can ask.
Better Shutter
Some suggested that they want a global shutter in the a7 V, but we belive that will ony drive up the cost. However, there must be the option of setting one’s shutter manual for their exposires, as it can be helpful to those workking with genres such as light painting or astrophotography. So, it would be great to see a lower limit than 30 seconds or a way to manually change this to a lower spec.
Improved Display and Menu
The current model has a 3-inch 1.36 million-dot fully tilting screen. The a7R V has a 3-inch 2.1 million-dot screen. It would be great if the resolution were further pumped to meet a7R V or we could get more, around 3.6 million dots. Similarly, the EVF, currently 3.6 million dots, can be raised to at least 9.44 million dots.
These are just a few things that can make the camera better. However, Sony must remember that they are competing with Nikon and Fujifilm, both of which have some great options to choose from. In fact. Sony itself had some ideal cameras within the same specifications, so if they want the a7 V to carry on its legacy, it has to be different and unique than the other models. No point in making a camera that can be replaced by another model from a different series. The a7c II is a great example in that case. Our hope is that Sony does not offer another camera that is just like the other one that came before it.
