Nikon’s latest range of mirrorless cameras has been quite exceptional in varied assessments, such as performance, ergonomics, and built quality. While we applaud Nikon’s newer cameras, we must also look back at older technology that has made it possible for Nikon to reach where it is today. And so, we take a stroll down the memory lane of older DSLRs, which continue to be great choices for photographers who want good devices on a budget. Here are the best Nikon DSLRs that you can buy today — all of which have been tested by us.
Nikon Df: A Legendary Camera
Launched in 2013, the Nikon Df was the company’s first attempt to give photographers a unique retro body camera with digital interiors. It features a 16.2MP FX-format CMOS sensor, optical viewfinder, rugged magnesium alloy body, 5.5fps continuous shooting speed, and 39 autofocus points. The camera offers great image quality, even at higher ISO, and its metering works splendidly well. However, we did find the autofocus somewhat lacking and the menu complicated. This kind of camera would work best for slow or medium-paced photography.
Nikon D800: Modest Megapixels

Another professional-grade camera, the Nikon D800, features a full-frame 36MP sensor. It features 51 autofocus points, a 3.2-inch rear LCD screen, and can shoot continuously up to 6fps. The camera offers great ergonomics and is built, and there is also a dual storage card. The camera’s image quality is great, and the ISO performance is better than that of the D700. The autofocus has improved, too, and the battery life is decent as well. This camera can be great for landscape photographers who need that extra pixel for details.
Nikon D750: The Favorite Amongst Many

The Nikon D750 sits between D610 and D810, featuring a 24.3MP FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor. It can record 1080p videos, comes with 51 autofocus points, shoots continuous at 6.5fps, and weighs only 750g. It is a great looking camera, with better wireless transmission, excellent low light performance, and accurate autofocus in dimly lit areas. This camera is perfect for serious enthusiasts and semi-professionals wanting a device that they can rely on.
Nikon D500: One of the Best Nikon DSLRs with an APS-C Sensor

The Nikon D500 is a replacement for the D300 series. It packs a 20MP sensor, a faster shooting speed of 10fps, ISO 51,200, 4k videos, and weighs just 760g. The camera is perfect for serious photographers who do not want to compromise. It features fast and accurate autofocus, a new touchscreen for the menu, comes with WiFi integration, better battery life, and RAW file versatility. With its great build, it is also a great choice for photojournalists and wildlife photographers even today. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best Nikon DSLRs still in our minds.
Nikon D850: The King of the Best Nikon DSLRs

An upgrade of the iconic D810, the Nikon D850 houses a 45.7 full-frame sensor and can shoot up to 8K timelapse. It can shoot continuously at 7 fps with continuous AF, 153 autofocus points, and has an ISO range of 64-25,000. Some of its pros include fantastic image quality and camera build, buttons that can glow in the dark, and great color depth and versatility; it also has a touchscreen that offers better navigation, wifi and Bluetooth settings, and plenty of video options for hybrid photographers. This camera is perfect for a professional photographer even today — and surely one of the best Nikon DSLRs.
